Before a Hurricane

  1. Take chickens and other domestic birds into a building and place them safely in a cage or box if possible.
  2. Release larger stocks such as cattle, horses, mules etc. in an open field area. Tying animals increases the chances of injury.
  3. Check on animals early and move them to safe location away from river banks and areas likely to have landslides. Provide enough water and feed to prevent them from breaking out.
  4. Remove carts etc. from under trees and remove the wheels for added protection.
  5. Chemicals, fertilizers and other toxic materials such as sprays or pesticides should be stored in the safest sections of buildings as they may cause fires if mixed.
  6. Reap mature crops.
  7. Pick coconuts.
  8. Cut or trim huge trees close to the house.
